Can I drive home after dental sedation?

In some cases, yes, but not always.

With mild sedation like nitrous oxide (laughing gas), most patients can safely drive themselves home. The effects wear off quickly once the mask is removed, allowing you to return to normal activities soon after your visit.

However, stronger forms of sedation, like oral or IV sedation, can leave you feeling drowsy or impair your reflexes for several hours. In these situations, you’ll need someone, a responsible friend or family member, to drive you home and stay with you until the effects fully wear off.

Preparing for Dental Sedation

Dental sedation helps many patients feel calm and comfortable during treatment, but it’s important to plan for what happens afterward. If there’s any chance you’ll receive moderate or deep sedation, arranging transportation and company for when you get home in advance will help you avoid stress and focus on rest and recovery.

At Dynamite Smiles Dentistry, Dr. Diane Tagye provides specific instructions based on your treatment plan, ensuring you know exactly what to expect before and after your appointment and ensuring a more comfortable recovery.
