An emergency dental appointment is not a substitute for life-threatening emergency treatment. If you are experiencing severe dental trauma like an injury to your jaw, please go to the nearest emergency room to receive the appropriate treatment from a medical doctor.

The Hallmarks of Excellent Emergency Dental Care

Emergency dentistry delivers care to patients who are scared and in pain, often with time of the essence. Here are three ways top emergency dentists deliver outstanding care.

Immediacy

Our highly effective emergency dentistry provides immediate relief from the pain and anxiety that often accompany sudden injuries or infections in a person’s teeth, gums, or jaw.

Long-Term Solutions

Prompt, high-quality care for dental emergencies like broken or knocked-out teeth, infections, or exposed nerves helps prevent complications and promotes quick healing and long-term oral health.

Flexible Scheduling

Accidents don’t maintain a strict 9-5 schedule. Emergency dentists must keep this in mind and provide scheduling options to ensure you get the care you need when you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental emergencies are scary, so knowing what to do and who to call is important when the unexpected happens. At Dynamite Smiles Dentistry, we do everything possible to see you immediately if you suffer from severe tooth pain, infection, a soft tissue injury, a broken restoration, or a knocked-out tooth.

If you have an accident and your tooth gets knocked out, it’s critical to act quickly. Keep reading to learn how to handle this particular dental emergency.

Handling a Knocked-Out Tooth

When your tooth gets knocked out, acting quickly is extremely important. The sooner we see you in our dental office, the better chance we have of saving your tooth. Here’s what you should do in the meantime:

  • Try to stay calm and locate your tooth.
  • Hold your tooth by the crown, not the root, and gently rinse it with milk.
  • Attempt to place your tooth back in its socket and then hold it in place with a tissue or a piece of gauze.
  • If you can’t put your tooth back in its socket, store it in a glass of milk or inside your cheek.
  • Call our dental office immediately; if we can see you within one hour, we have the best chance of saving your tooth.

Steps for Handling a Dental Emergency

Contact our emergency dental office immediately at (480) 591-8111. While waiting for your appointment, follow these specific steps:

  • Knocked-Out Tooth — Handle the tooth by the crown, and don’t touch the root. If the tooth’s dirty, you can rinse it gently, but don’t scrub. Place the tooth back in the socket if possible; otherwise, store it in milk or saliva. Time is critical—seek treatment within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth.
  • Severe Pain or Swelling — Apply a cold compress to the affected area for 15 minutes at a time. Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed. Document when the pain began and any triggering factors.
  • Cracked or Broken Tooth — Rinse your mouth with warm water to remove bacteria and food debris. Apply a cold compress to minimize swelling. Gather any broken pieces and bring them with you to your appointment. Avoid chewing on the affected side.
  • Bleeding Gums or Soft Tissue — Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze for 15-20 minutes. If bleeding persists after sustained pressure, seek immediate care.

Common Dental Emergencies

At Dynamite Smiles Dentistry, we consider tooth pain to be a dental emergency. Suffering from consistent and severe tooth pain can point to a more serious oral health issue, like an infection or impacted tooth.

Having a background in engineering, Dr. Heday is a natural problem solver, and she can find an effective way to protect your teeth. Our team wants to relieve your pain as quickly as possible and find the origin of your discomfort so we can preserve your smile’s health.

Common dental emergencies include:

Broken, Chipped, or Cracked Tooth

Sudden dental trauma, like biting a hard piece of food, can damage a tooth or result from a deep cavity you didn’t know you had. If possible, bring the broken pieces of your tooth with you to your appointment.

Dental Abscess

A dental abscess can lead to a harmful oral infection and result from an injury, untreated cavity, or old dental work. Symptoms include bad breath, pain, and fever. If you have a dental abscess, we must see you as soon as possible to control the infection. Depending on the severity of the infection, treatment can include antibiotics, a root canal, or tooth extraction.

Severe Toothache

Many factors can cause a toothache like a deep cavity to an infection. If you have severe and consistent tooth pain, please contact us so we can determine the cause and find the best treatment for your needs.

Lost Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is a critical dental emergency that we need to treat immediately if there's any hope of re-implanting it in your jaw. If you lose a tooth, call our dental office immediately.

You can gently rinse the tooth, but take care not to touch the root or any attached tissue. Try to replace it in the socket if possible; if not, place the tooth in a container of saliva or milk and bring it with you to your appointment. If we cannot reinsert your natural tooth, we will replace it with a realistic dental restoration, such as a bridge or dental implant.

Lost or Damaged Restoration

A lost or damaged restoration requires speedy repair or replacement. Whether you have a cracked filling or a lost dental crown, Dr. Heday can fix it for you with speed and efficiency.

Do you need urgent care for a dental problem, like a chipped tooth, a broken tooth, or extreme pain? Dr. Heday and our dental team can help you! We have several years of experience treating dental accidents, injuries, and infections, so you can rest assured you will be in very caring and capable hands.
