For most, the holidays mean indulgence — sweets, rich foods, and drinks, sugary, alcoholic, or both. While these treats make for grand celebrations, they can leave your teeth worse for wear. Getting back on track with your oral hygiene routine after the holidays is a perfect way to start the new year fresh and ensure a bright, healthy smile!

Refresh Your Oral Hygiene Routine

After weeks of holiday indulgence, returning to the basics of at-home dental care is an excellent start. A consistent, thorough routine will help remove plaque buildup and prevent cavities. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes. Floss every time you brush (or as close as possible) to clear plaque from between your teeth. Finally, use a fluoride or antibacterial mouthwash to eliminate lingering bacteria and strengthen enamel.

Rehydrate and Eat Smile-Friendly Foods

Sugary treats and acidic drinks can leave your teeth vulnerable. Restoring balance with hydration and nutritious foods can make a big difference. Focus on drinking lots of water to wash away lingering sugars and acids. When you snack, choose crunchy, nutritious, fibrous foods like apples or carrots to naturally clean teeth. Additionally, increase the calcium in your diet to strengthen your tooth enamel and jawbone.

Schedule a Post-Holiday Dental Checkup

The new year is a perfect time to catch up on dental health. Schedule a January teeth cleaning and oral exam to address any damage from the holiday festivities, including:

  • Removing plaque and tartar
  • Addressing sensitivity, cavities, or other emerging concerns
  • Discussing cosmetic treatments like teeth whitening to rejuvenate your smile

Taking care of your teeth after the holidays doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a refreshed routine, healthier food choices, and a quick trip to the dentist, you can start the new year with a healthier, brighter smile!
